WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO CLASS?

If it's your first time coming, simply arrive wearing comfortable clothing that provides you free range of motion, and a water bottle (as you will get thirsty!).  Our regular students should wear their doboks with belt to every class, bring water, and if they're participating in a sparring or weapons class, they should bring their requisite gear and equipment.

WHAT DOES THE TYPICAL CLASS PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

Each class is 1 hour long.  Students should arrive early enough to place their shoes and other items on the available shelves just inside the entrance, then move to the back room for warm-ups at the start of their class time.  The first 15 minutes of class are guided warmup exercises and stretching.  After that, students will line up along the mats in the main instruction area and take their places on the mats when instructed to do so.  Students will show respect to the flags, the training area, and the instructor.  After this, students may be briefly quizzed on the requisite memory materials, and then the classes' lessons will commence for the remainder of the time.

HOW DO I EARN A NEW BELT IN TAEKWONDO?

Our belts reflect the gradual, though focused journey from white belt to black belt.  Students may have no prior knowledge of self-defense, and the requirements of a white belt reflect this.  They'll learn the basics with the beginner belts, forming a strong foundation upon which more and more complex taekwondo knowledge and skills will be built as they progress toward the higher-level belts.

Students who are committed to the journey will spend three months on each belt, be tested at the end of this three-month time, and then graduate to the next higher belt.  It's possible for a student to go from a white belt to a black belt within three years.

Each belt typically requires students to learn a new form (a choreographed routine), there are materials they'll need to memorize, and finally, there are kicking sets, blocking sets, and self-defense techniques they'll need to become proficient in.  There are colored stripes placed on the student's belt, which students will earn as they learn the various graduation knowledge and skill requirements.
